All About Batting - 80/20

Looped Quilting Studio offers many types and brands of batting with differing fiber content. This blog series, All About Batting, aims to help with making the choice of batting for your quilts. My most popular batting is 80/20 (80% cotton/20% polyester blend), it will be detailed first. An overview of cotton, wool and bamboo battings will be published in the next couple of weeks, so check back or subscribe for updates.

80/20 batting is an excellent all purpose batting. It will yield a warm and durable quilt that is more wrinkle resistant and economical than 100% cotton. Looped Quilting Studio offers two brands of 80/20; Hobb's and Quilter's Dream. Although these two brands have the same fiber content, they do vary in quality and loft.

Hobb's 80/20 is less dense than Quilter's Dream. It tends to have a nonuniform density of fibers, but a higher loft which results in a fluffier quilt. Hobb's is more budget friendly with the cost of a twin sized (72 x 90) quilt being $18.

Quilter's Dream has an even, uniform density. It is extremely soft but is less lofty than Hobb’s. It is a bit more expensive than Hobb’s with the cost of a twin sized quilt being $23.

Below are photos that compare Hobb's and Quilter's Dream 80/20. Samples of these battings (both quilted and unquilted) are available in the studio to assist in making the decision as to which 80/20 is right for your quilt. I am always happy to help if you have batting or any other quilting questions.
